- Magama – Hope EP

Biography Magama

Magama (Matthijs Gaikema) started making music 15 years ago, when stumbling upon music software in a local library in Dedemsvaart. At that time, he was mainly interested in making trance music, next to a variety of other styles, including house and classical music. After a while, he was introduced by friends into hiphop music . This friends wanted to start a rap-group called Twee Ons and as the rappers did not have anyone to make the beats, Magama gave it a try. This was the start of an inspiring and exciting period in wich he learned from scratch how to make hiphop beats. At roughly the same time, he was introduced by another friend into the underground techno scene in Zwolle. In this group, he was inspired by the love they had for electronic music, synthesizers, playing and mixing records.

In 2002, he went with his friend from Twee Ons to Enschede to study Communications. At this time, he played and produced hiphop as well as techno, though these styles were strictly devided. In his beats for Twee Ons, he mainly used samples, varying from classical music to jazz, with a strong interest in early 90's beats. In his electronic productions he developed a more melodic and atmospheric sound, varying from techno, electro and downtempo music.

As Twee Ons became more serious in it's ambitions, he invested more and more time into the hiphop part of his productions, which resulted in several small albums and EP's with Twee Ons. They also were rewarded for this winning the Oogst van Overijssel award in 2006.

At the end of his study, Magama was looking for a way to combine his love of the electronic sound with the hiphop sound. He decided to focus more on his own productions and got to know the future beats scene and the DubbelzoDwars crew in Enschede. This was like coming home, a complete scene combining the electronic sounds he loves with a hiphop-based soul feeling.

Magama joined the DubbelZoDwars-crew and released some beats on the DZD Beattapes. Now he can share his love for the music and his sound on his first solo EP: Hope…
