SuperCharger presenteert T-N-T – Jacob Marley
Aan het eind van een roerig jaar, waarin zij internationaal niet alleen veel lof ontvingen voor hun werk op de albums van Killah Priest en Hell Razah, maar ook voor hun eerste single van Black Marvel, Tell Me, introduceert SuperCharger Records een nieuwe groep met een gratis online single. De groep T-N-T is een krachtige combinatie van twee emcees die al eerder op The Campaign te horen waren, Thun en Tyrone. Thun draait als neef van Black Marvel al jaren mee en brengt zijn bizarre onderwerpen met een hele eigen flow. Tyrone komt met een andere benadering, zijn zware stem gromt zijn sombere visies met een donkere bas over keiharde beats. Zij delen samen een voorliefde voor het macabere en vullen elkaar perfect aan over de manische beats van Godz Wrath en nieuwkomers Bone Pesci en Lockheat uit Zoetermeer.
Na een relatief korte periode in de studio heeft het hardwerkende duo inmiddels al een hele stapel indrukwekkende tracks op de plank liggen. Een van die tracks, Jacob Marley, is losjes gebaseerd op het concept van de geest uit Scrooge. T-N-T wordt in dit nummer meegenomen om een verontrustende kijk op het verleden, heden en de toekomst te nemen. Door deze associatie met het bekende Kerstverhaal koos SuperCharger de Jacob Marley track voor een gratis release op Kerstavond. Een kleine introductie, een ziek cadeautje… Liefhebbers van de harde Hip Hop waar SuperCharger om bekend staat kunnen vanaf 24 december hun hart op halen. Het nummer is vanaf die datum te downloaden op de website van het label, www.superchargerrecords.com.

Een van de langstlopende Hip Hop magazines wereldwijd, het Engelse Hip Hop Connection, bewijst dat ze hun smaak nog niet hebben verloren. In de recente issue is er ruimschoots plaats voor het Nederlandse SuperCharger label. In hun top 25 countdown komt de laatste single van MOD the Black Marvel met stip op drie binnen. Daarnaast worden in de ‘50 best albums of 2007’ Godz Wrath tracks genoemd als beste tracks van respectievelijk ‘the Offering’ van Killah priest (#24) en ‘Renaissance Child’ van Hell Razah (#36) en wordt Ciph Barker genoemd en besproken als belofte in een interview met UK producer Beat Butcher. Ook in de vorige editie waren er lovende woorden voor het nederlandse productieteam, in de razend enthousiaste recensie van de Killah Priest plaat worden de beats van Godz Wrath ‘..electrifying.. ’ en ’…caressing the solar plexus’ genoemd.
ik zat net wat topics te checken over de beste albums van dit jaar en besefte me dat ik al jaren geen albums meer check.. ik weet niet of dat aan mijn iPod ligt of omdat in Hip hop ‘the art of making an album’ een langzame dood is gestorven, maar tegenwoordig pik ik eerlijk gezegd de zogenaamde kersen van de taart en laat de rest liggen. Misschien dat ik daarmee een hoop gruwelijke tracks mis die op je groeien per luisterbeurt, maar door de golf van releases elk jaar is er gewoon niet genoeg tijd om alles te luisteren.. en dan nog mis ik n hoop dingen (zo wachten er projecten van El-P, little Brother, Y-Society, Jeru en honderden anderen op een luisterbeurt die waarschijnlijk nooit zal komen). Toch heb ik genoeg dope dingen gehoord dit jaar…

It’s a demo
Most people ain’t trying to hear it when you are shopping them. Kool G rap couldn’t sell Nas to any label and it took Serch a while too before Columbia saw the potential. Jay even started Rocafella because nobody would offer him a decent deal. KRS started his Juice crew war over the fact that Mr.Magic wasn’t trying to hear his early BDP tracks. However, in retrospect it’s always fun to hear the first steps of artists who later became certified superstars (or at least much respected). Over the years i stumbled over a couple of these demo’s and i wanted to share them with you. This is for the listeners…

Most of these are not demo’s but early features and freestyles. It’s no secret Hova started out as a sidekick to Big Jaz, his feature on ‘Hawaiian Sophie’ is the best known one. The other notable features are with Original Flavor who had some momentum at the time, Jigga steals the show though. It’s also where he gained his first stage experience, touring with the crew.
‘What’s in a name’ cleverly uses some famous names from that time and ‘I Can’t get with that’(which was a b-side to in my lifetime on payday) showcases Jay’s fast flow.

This is supposedly the original demotape that G Rap and later Serch shopped around. All of these tracks have been widely spread on the internet, showcasing a pre-illmatic Nas that already shows the promise of one of the greatest. On some tracks like ‘I’m a villain’ and ‘number one with a bullet’ you can still hear the G Rap influence dominating his style ( G Rap also features on the latter), but on tracks like ‘Déjà vu’ the brilliance of nasty nas prevails. ‘Understanding’ also features the first ever appearance of a young AZ.

Most of the tracks featured on here are actually lifted from ‘the last king of NY mixtape’ that came out earlier this year. The quality is at times horrible and there is a loud mouth DJ screaming over them, but the material is just too interesting. Notable is the ‘unsigned hype tape’ that obviously won Biggie Smalls the UH spot in The Source. Some later demo versions of known songs and early freestyles are also included.

This is actually a 213 demo in bad quality due to the cassette tape. But if you can listen through that you will hear a unique pre-chronic/deep cover Snoop going at it with Warren G. The unique voice stylings are already there, I wonder if this is the track that got Dre’s attention?
Wu-Tang Clan

Some people say that the Wu’s early work was badly engineered and had that vintage basement sound, but listening to these demo’s they stepped it up a lot one their later releases. RZA lays the foundation to the signature sound on here with some very early versions of later Wu-Bangers. The unique style and swagger that made the wu movement so big, with such an impact, is already evident. They did grow a lot from this 92 demo to 93’s Enter the Wu-Tang… and i’m glad they did.
KRS One/BDP

This joint still sounds like the old school sound that KRS’ generation revolutionized. The influence of a Melle mel is definitely heard. Also the Synth/bongo sound didn’t make way for the JB breaks yet. The young KRS does already show his teacher persona attacking the crack epidemic of that time. He evolved from this powerful, yet rather average mc to one of the biggest Hip Hop artists of his generation.

O to the C made a lot of heads turn when his classic ‘Time’s up’ dropped in 94. His debut album is still an underrated 90’s eastcoast classic. He was first heard on Organized Konfusion’s fudge pudge, but the talented DITC lyricist had a demo out at that time as well. These tracks showcase an already mature artist that was ready for his ‘word…life’ and ‘jewelz’ records. A shame he never really made it above ground really….

Speaking of OK, Pharoahe and Prince Po had their own demo out some years before that. The virtuoso flows of the duo (then known as Simply II Positive) are already evident on here.
The influence of a Rakim and a G Rap is more obvious on here, but the signature cadence is already there. On tracks like ‘Prisoners of war’ their knack for original concepts also shows.
Lil Fame/MOP

These are really Fame demo tracks, but since Fame went on to become one half of Brownsville’s hardest; MOP, i will look at it as such. These two tracks indicate the hardcore mentality of the young fizzy Womack, but the sound is still funky and less adrenaline induced- in your face than the later work the Mash Out Posse put out.

Com has always been artist whose artistic growth was evident from album to album. In retrospect his debut album ‘Can i borrow a dollar’ almost sounds like a demo. Here are two tracks from even before that record. Lifted from a mixtape again. But interesting enough to include in this list. With the success of his last releases Com has finally gained the commercial acclaim to match his talent and music.

The distinct jazzy laidback jeep sound from the Beatminerz combined with Buckshot’s gruff voiced singsong flows were not there from the very start. The same crew is responsible for this uptempo demo in a typical early nineties NY style. The bucktown attitude is already there, as well as the obvious talent and the duckdown chants. Interesting start to one of NY’s nicest movements from that era.

Hip Hop’s favourite militant act of recent times started out as just that. These early demo’s indicate the same political mindstate that made them relatively famous, but have a more traditional eastcoast sound than the more progressive sounds and flows featured on their debut album (which had some of the earlier Kanye beats) and later work. Nevertheless these are some dope conscious tracks from the RBG’s.

Not really a demo, but still a great listen. This track actually had some monetum in the early nineties and features a young DMX without the style that made him a household name in the late 90s. with the decline of his career over the last years, the only time he makes headlines nowadays is when Darkman X clashes with the law. ‘Born loser’ after all??

You’d think all would be well in the land of the Wu-Tang Clan right now. The Shaolin set finally settled on a date for their long-delayed The 8 Diagrams comeback. But if you ask Ghostface Killah, things actually aren’t that sweet with the Wu. Ghost is fuming that the group’s album is set to drop on the same date as his next solo album, The Big Dough Rehab. According to him, he had that date already secured, but setbacks with the Wu project planted The 8 Diagrams on the same day. And now he’s not budging, he said. At all.
“I had December 4 for the longest,” he explained. “But the Wu album, brothers was kinda late on doing whatever they were doing and pushed it back … on my date. You can put this in there, I’m not [mad at] all the members. It’s not based on the members, but the hierarchy at Wu-Tang Clan is on some bullsh-–. They trying to f-—around and make me push my album back and doing all this. But n-—as ain’t f-—ing around or give us money when we did them Wu-Tang tours. The first one, they paid us after a while, but this last one, n-—as is holding onto a lot of money. And [they’re] upset based on that. It’s a battle right now.” Ghost did not specify exactly which Wu members are the “hierarchy.”
“The Big Dough Rehab is my album,” he continued. “8 Diagrams is their album. But it ain’t got nothing to do with the regular members. ‘Cause I love Raekwon, Masta Killa, U-God, Genius, all them. But it’s on right now.”
Ghost said he’s frustrated because his album would have been finished by now had he not chosen to be loyal and go on tour with the Clan over the summer as part of the Rock the Bells ticket with Rage Against the Machine. He even claimed Steve Rifkin, who signed the group to Loud and is releasing their latest album, put calls in to execs in hopes of stopping Ghost’s album from seeing the light of day. (Inquiries made to Rifkin’s office had not been returned as of press time.) In the meantime, Ghost is moving ahead with his album. The first single, “Celebrate” — featuring Kid Capri and produced by Sean C. — should be leaking soon, he said. Others set to contribute to The Big Dough Rehab are Scram Jones, Raekwon and Method Man.
Ghost is also set to drop a book, “The World According to Pretty Toney,” on December 4. The book — based on skits from MTV2 — will feature Ghost dishing out his particular brand of advice on a number of topics, from gambling to education. As far as Ghost’s participation on The 8 Diagrams, though, so far he’s only jumped on a handful of tracks.
“I got on some of them,” he said. “A few of them. … N-—as better pay my f-—ing money. Matter of fact, they can keep the money — just get me out of their life right now. They can keep that money, it’s all good now. I don’t even wanna talk about it no more.” …
Met soulvol trompetgeschal en keiharde drums keert the Black Marvel triomfantelijk terug aan het muzikale front. Tell Me is de eerste single van Black Marvel op het SuperCharger Records label en is vanaf vandaag gratis te downloaden op de officiële website. De opzwepende track is voorzien van een grimmige video waarin het politieke, maatschappijkritische karakter van de teksten centraal staat.
“Er is bewust gekozen voor een hardcore single” aldus het SuperCharger label, “Dat is wie we zijn en waar we voor staan, maar dat is ook wat er nu nodig is”. Tell Me is in ieder geval anders dan de meeste Hip Hop die je momenteel hoort en dat is voor een deel te danken aan de typische rauwe sound van het nummer. Black Marvel is namens het Godz Wrath productie team zelf verantwoordelijk voor de stampende productie. In augustus stonden de Nederlandse producers nog in het nieuws vanwege hun grote aandeel op het laatste Killah Priest album. In een recent interview steekt de Wu-Tang lyricist zijn bewondering dan ook niet onder stoelen of banken: “Godz Wrath is my dudes out there …. Black Marvel is incredible … Godz Wrath is really like the new wave of Hip Hop. Them dudes is gonna take over”.
Tell Me is het eerste voorproefje van het Black Marvel album dat binnen afzienbare tijd zal gaan verschijnen. Het langverwachte project is zo goed als afgerond en zal de lat voor rauwe
Engelstalige Hip Hop in Nederland nogmaals een stuk hoger leggen.
Het nummer en de bijbehorende videoclip van de hand van Brutesque, zijn alvast te vinden op de SuperCharger website, www.superchargerrecords.com. Deze online thuisbasis van the Black Marvel heeft een flinke update gehad en liefhebbers kunnen daar nu onder andere terecht op een forum en mailinglist voor de laatste info over Black Marvel, Godz Wrath en de andere SuperCharger artiesten.
okay… cool. ja mr.probz/propaganda is nu vooral met andere dingen bezig, maar vind ik zelf wel een van de meest talentvolle emcees van NL… en de beats worden door gasten als Killah priest etc overseas gebruikt… dus de meningen verschillen…

het gaat mij erom dat het nog nooit is vertoond en dus gewoon mogelijk is tegenwoordig… wat betreft die capaciteit van 5000 ze hadden op 2 derde een groot doek opgehangen wat de zaal opbrak… aan de ene kant volle bak voor een groot podium aan de andere kant chill met stands, ramps en graf… dus dat werkte prima zo
los van het feit dat het een nogal eenzijdige, doch kwalitatieve line-up was, moeten we toch wel concluderen dat dit iets heel bijzonders was uiteindelijk… er waren volgens mij tussen de 3000 en 3500 man binnen voor een party met alleen maar Nederlandse acts (ja Bang Bang komt uit UK, maar beschouw ik voor het gemak als NLse act). Dat is naar mijn weten nog nooit eerder vertoont in NL… alleen festivals als Drum Rhythm en misschien Planet Rock hadden dergelijke bezoekersaantallen en dan met voornamelijk grote buitenlandse acts… zaterdag is bewezen dat je een groot Hip Hop evenement in NL met overwegend lokale acts succesvol kan neerzetten…

klopt… Ghetto Jesus was eigenlijk opgenomen voor het Black market Militia project, maar Priest vond m zo dope dat ie m uiteindelijk voor zn eigen shit heeft gehouden. Ondertussen was ie al op th Campaign geslipt als snippet. Daar staat ie ook in de originele mix van Godz Wrath zelf… helaas is dat t minpunt van t album dat t allemaal n beetje kut is gemixed… maar ondanks dat is t n heel sterk album geworden vind ik zelf. Priest gaat los lyrically & technically…
