GORETEX
interview by Farhaad
Short, but entertaining. Here’s my interview with Goretex, one fourth of now defunct rap group, Non Phixion. We cover drugs, peeing, rap, and of course… REO Speedwagon. Enjoy.
Haad: First and foremost, thanks for taking the time out and doing this interview. I want to apologize for not being a big titty naked broad..seeing as how that’s what the site is about.
Goretex: It’s no problem at all man. Don’t apologize for not being a big-titted chick. Well, to be honest, I am a bit disappointed. I’ll be fine haha
Haad: Now, aside from music, what’s Goretex up to these days?
Goretex: Well, the last year or so I’ve been grinding it out, preparing for the new mixtape, and the new album after that. Just been in the studio really, like I am right now. I would’ve liked to have it out already, but I’m taking my time… My goons like it gourmet so I’m keeping it heavy.
Haad: For the Lames and Squares who don’t know about you or your music, can you tell us a little bit about how you started, and how you got on?
Goretex: I got started first just by getting in music itself at a pretty early age. I was the six year old creep invading my dad’s Syd Barret and Black Sabbath albums. I remember my dad telling me the gnome guy in the cape on the Paranoid album was the boogie man. I started collecting music after that. I started stealing albums from the library in Long Beach, out on Long Island. Originally I wanted to be in Kiss. That didnt work out, so I started spitting. Actually around 80, 81 my cousin got me into hip hop. He was a local DJ in Long Beach, he had a lot of vinyl back then, like all the James Brown stuff which was hard to find. These days you can buy them or download anything. Back then it was like a big deal to have those records. He put me on to Apache and other obscure stuff at the time like Kraftwerk. I was younger but there were MCs all around me at that time, doing graffiti, breakdancing. I caught the fix. I started writing graff, doing dumb shit like writing all over my school; meanwhile, I lived right across the street. I started to buy records instead of just stealing them. I listened to Iron Maiden, Run DMC, Black Flag, Hall and Oates..all the hot shit at the time. I moved to Glenwood Projects in 86, after that I started moving towards a career in music.
I started demoing stuff around 89 and around 92 me and Ill Bill formed The Dead Celebrities. It was him, B Wiz And myself. (Rest in peace B Wiz). Biz had the equipment. We started doing demos, just foul shit hahaha. Stuff like “Junkies With Guns,” and “Eat My Ass.” Me and him would craft the beats, he had an Ensoniq keyboard at the time. I think at the time me and Bill were influenced by the Geto Boys and Slayer a lot, they were the most Brutal. As far as shock value goes, we wanted to out do them. I Found out Scarface (of the Geto Boys fame) was a huge Black Sabbath and Kiss fan. He admits to being influnced by Kiss. I found that compelling, also bizarre. Lyrically my main influence would be Rakim. He was a deep thinker, an old soul and a poet. “Follow The Leader” is the best rap album ever made. I’m happy to share the earth with him.
Haad: It’s been almost 4 years since the The Art of Dying dropped. (I remember skipping Humanities class and heading to Best Buy to cop that.) Tell me you got something new bubbling!
Goretex: Yeah, it’s been a while. I’ve always recorded stuff and stayed busy though. I’m my own worst critic. I have a lot of stuff that won’t ever see the light of day..so saying that, I have new material coming out in September. Maybe even sooner. October at the latest. If you feel my past material you’ll probably dig it. I only have 5 love songs this time. My first single will be myself and Kool Moe Dee, with Leif Garrett on the hook. Hahaha. Actually I’m working with hungry cats on production. All bangers, all official shit, total goonizm. I ain’t buying cats new cars for beats. There will be a lot of new shit coming in the future.
Haad: As a Large Professor, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier stan myself, I just have to ask..what was it like working with them cats back in the Non-Phixion days? Did you meet, and chop it up with them, or were y’all not even in the studio at the same time?
Goretex: It was an honor of course. I was living a particular dream i had. We all were! I spent time with all of those cats you just mentioned while making and recording The Future Is now. It’s a great memory of smoking an ounce of weed with DJ Premier while going through records with him. Having me spit my bars and he’s sitting there etc. I think we felt like the world was finally paying attention to us. I felt his role with the group was very fufilling. Working with Paul was like a psychedelic experience to me seeing the way he works and operates during his sessions. He was way into what he was doing. He doesn’t smoke weed or anything but after a mixdown, he’d grab a chair and just sit in the corner by himself with the lights out and stuff his head in the speaker analyzing the sounds. He reminded me of some guru like Sun Ra at the time, meanwhile, someone dropped by with some pills which we all gobbled up. He understood the group and our direction 100%… Pete Rock is tough to remember, everyone was pretty zonked hahaha. Pete got real hammered with us, it was great. Again, here I am getting to harass Pete Rock about the Freddy McCoy record he used on Mecca & The Soul Brother while he’s rolling godfather blunts. I loved what we did with him. I wish we did more.
Haad: Speaking of Non-Phixion. That’s over with, right? Are you still cool with everyone in the Uncle Howie/Psycho+Logical camp?
Goretex: Who knows? I didn’t want the group to break up. It’s a long story, but obviously you want to know. What I will say is this; we all took drugs, except DJ Eclipse and Necro. Those cats don’t drink or smoke. We respected that, that’s why Eclipse ran the tours. It was funny when I did some european press and the first thing they’d want to know was how much heroin I shoot everyday hahaha. It was amusing. Anyway, if it was up to me, I’d like to see Non Phixion active and alive. Lots of supporters were hurt by the break up, I understand that. That said, like anyone else I’m human. I used bad judgment in a particular situation that could’ve been handled privately. I had some issues with an ex that got in the way of my position in Non Phixion. Just a lot of fucking drama I’m free of right now, lets put it that way. There’s more but that’s the gist of it. Right now everyone is doing their own thing so I have no clue what any future reality holds. I wish them the best.
Haad: I think most of the readers will be shocked to find out that you’re a metal head. On the metal front, what are you listening to these days?
Goretex: I listen to all kinds of stuff except Latvian techno or country. I did get into metal first but probably because hip-hop didn’t exist then. I learned in 1981 that The Kinks Are actually a punk group by some raging-speedhead punk with a mohawk on the bus..and some stuff like Toto’s “Africa” was something I should totally avoid and so on. By like 84 I was deep into Metallica, Celtic Frost, Slayer. Try blasting Misfits out of your room in the projects, it was harsh. There’s a bunch of newer stuff that’s good like Winters, Torche..a lot of sludgy shit. Electric Wizard of course…I like the new Gnarls Barkley stuff..a lot of black metal and thrash too. Weird prog and funk…not too much good new hip hop to listen to. It’s pathetic.
Haad: Is 88’ really the best year in hip-hop?
Goretex: I think it’s the best year hip hop existed. Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Biz Markie, and not to mention the brutality of Kool G. Rap. He’s O.G., Original Goon. After 1999 shit got weird.
Haad: So godsgirls. com is kind of a fashionable place..for a place with titties everywhere. Think of it as the Paris streets of porno. What kinda gear do you usually rock?
Goretex: I’m down with porn. It’s a catalyst I suppose. I’m a Gods Girl’s supporter as well. Lately I’ve discovered teen lesbian pissing.. As far as gear, it depends on the setting. Maybe some khakis and a nice sweater, sometimes all black. You might catch me wearing an REO Speedwagon Or Bathory baseball jersey with a chain. A Cable. Perhaps some Goretex Nikes. If it’s a funeral or wedding, interchangeable I suppose.. I’ll throw on a nice $1500 suit.
Haad: Alright man, I think I’m gonna let you go ahead and do your thing. Thanks for sitting down and answering these questions. If there’s anything you want to say, this would be the time. Shout outs, fuck yous. Anything!
Goretex: I love you all.
