It’s not especially fancy or artistic, but it is a reminder that JA–Jonathan Avildsen–is still out there, leaving his mark and reaffirming his reputation as perhaps the city’s most elusive tagger.
“He’s tough,” says a police source familiar with JA. “He’s not always out there. He’s not easy to find, not easy to catch. He’s like a ghost.” While graffiti still is scorned by public officials, it is increasingly part of the cultural mainstream, and JA, 38, remains one of the city’s most prolific taggers and possibly its most interesting case study.
If the name Jonathan Avildsen sounds somehow familiar, there’s a reason for that. JA’s father, John Avildsen, is a director who won the Oscar for “Rocky” and also directed “The Karate Kid” and “Lean on Me,” among other films.
JA himself is no stranger to Hollywood, with a handful of minor roles on television and in films, including “The Karate Kid Part III” and “Rocky V,” both directed by his dad. In “Rocky V,” JA plays a drug addict–a case, police sources say, of art imitating life, as drugs have long been JA’s problem.
That might explain why he is said to be estranged–or at least not all that close–to his father. Father and son made headlines in 1989 when JA was sued by the city for tagging subway cars and signs along the Henry Hudson Parkway

Man allegedly laced girlfriend’s smoothie with ’abortion pil
APPLETON, Wis. — A 34-year-old man who owns several hotels and gas stations in the Fox Valley and northeastern Wisconsin is accused of giving his girlfriend the abortion pill RU-486 because he didn’t want children.
The 39-year-old Kaukauna woman couldn’t understand why she suddenly miscarried twice especially after her regular medical check-ups showed her pregnancies were going well.
So she went to authorities and after testing an ice cream smoothie the man had purchased for her, Outagamie County Sheriff’s detectives confirmed her suspicions.
Manishkumar M. Patel, 34, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon on homicide and reckless endangerment charges.
Patel, who is married to another woman, has had an intimate relationship with the 39-year-old woman since 2003. They got to know each other because both are from India and share a common cultural background, authorities say.
Patel and the 39-year-old woman have a 3-year-old child but Patel told detectives he didn’t want any more children.
When he learned his girlfriend was pregnant, he moved in with her under the guise of taking care of her and made her meals and tea, said Outagamie County sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Shortess.
“That was the only time he seemed interested in her, when he thought she was pregnant,” said Shortess.
Shortess and sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Carpenter described Patel as manipulative and controlling of the woman who bought the home Patel was living in with his wife and was paying the mortgage. The 39-year-old woman, who is a family physician, also purchased vehicles for Patel.
RU-486 tablets were found at Patel’s home when authorities conducted a search. Carpenter said officials believe Patel obtained them outside the United States.
“We interviewed him and he admitted to using the pills on her,” said Carpenter. “He indicated he didn’t want any more children.”
The woman had miscarriages in December 2006 and September 2007. The pregnancies were 15 weeks along in the first miscarriage and five to seven weeks along in the second miscarriage.
When Patel purchased a smoothie at a local ice cream store in mid-September the woman sat in the car while he went inside to buy the drink, the detectives said. He split the drink in two and after pouring part of the smoothie into another cup, the woman told detectives she saw him thoroughly mix it before giving it to her. Because of her suspicions, the woman kept the smoothie which was later tested and found to contain the crushed up abortion pill.
Detectives had difficulty finding a lab to test the drink because RU-486 is tightly controlled and few labs test for it, said Carpenter. After contacting the FDA, a lab in Cincinnati was found to test for the abortion drug and it came back positive.
While the woman was relieved to learn her suspicions were true, she is devastated, said Carpenter.
“She’s a very intelligent person and she just got involved in a relationship with a manipulative and evil man,” Carpenter said.
